I'm sure what I'm about to say has been told by others before. However, I feel we need these kind of reminders to keep ourselves in line with God's Word. Please feel free to share your thoughts regarding this topic.

Sometimes I think many in the Brethren community (just like any other denominations) are just like the Pharisees, claiming to know God's Word, but miserably failing to implement it in their own lives. In other words, they're spiritually blind. I look at my local brethren community and I can see one word which would perfectly describe it- COMPETITION (and not the healthy type). This happens everywhere. Politics within the churches, families focused mainly on competing against each other materialistically (topping each other to see who gets the most amount of mercedes and lexus in their driveways, who gets the bigger mansions, who can send all their kids for engineering or medicine) all for achieving a degree of elation and status among everyone and in the process spiritually gain nothing- absolute zero. While they're doing this, they sacrifice their personal holiness. They make their kids attend every church activity, but let them run wild during the rest of the week. Pathetic! Who is to blame? The parents and local assemblies are partly to be blamed for not mentoring and disciplining these kids. Conferences (with the good motive of spiritual edification for which they were initially started) have now become a focus and a market for much more than that- socializing for the sake of marrying off their children. For people who attend such events, a followup questionnaire should be given to them of how they were edified from these events. This would reveal the real motives behind many who are going.
Local churches concentrate on taking sermons and studies regarding doctrine (I'm not saying doctrine is not important), but they neglect to deal with practical issues the young generation faces today. I believe if you ask many of them questions regarding simple topics (drugs, alcoholism, premarital relationships/sexual immorality), they would not be able to tell you what the Bible teaches regarding those things. They may just give basic answers which either support or condemn such activities, but many wouldn't be able to defend what they believe from God's Word. I say this from my own experience. Parents and leaders of local assemblies must tackle this issue. There's no excuses for this like using foolish excuses "like western brethren kids are not exposed enough to the Indian culture, so that is why they behave in such a way." Indian culture has nothing to do with it. They need a culture which comes from God's Word. They need correcting and disciplining both by the families and churches.
Its high time the brethren community wakes up. It needs a revival. If this doesn't change, if we keep disobeying God and remain ignorant, we are inviting His judgement and wrath up on us. Its sad and disappointing to hear my generation of youth going far from the Lord. This is the time, this is the grace period God has given to us to change. So let's do it. We need more accountability among believers within all the churches. Correction and discipline should be done and when required for believers, it should be done in a loving way and those who are at the receiving end of it must receive it with understanding. love and respect to those who correct them.
General Forum : Finding a suitable spouse

    Author: dannyboy_84
Subject: Finding a suitable spouse
Posted: 10 February 2011 at 12:28am

Hi, I have couple of questions which I wanted to ask regarding finding a suitable spouse. I know the the most important requirement is that they should be a born again and baptized believer. But some additional questions came in my regarding how the character of the spouse should be. I'm asking these questions from a male's perspective.

(1) Some women like being independent (especially those who have worked hard to obtain professional degrees). They all of a sudden feel uncomfortable seeing the husband as the head of the family and being submissive and obedient to them. I know that the Bible clearly states that in Ephesians 5:22-33 and also Genesis 3:16 regarding how wives must be submissive and obedient to their husbands. From Genesis 3:16, I gathered that it's in the nature of women to try and control their husbands. Just wanted to make sure if all of this means that as husbands, we have the final say on all matters (after of course consulting with the wife)? If the potential spouse I ask about this has a hard time accepting this, is it better to move on and not look at them as a candidate?

(2). Just to ask add another question related to the question above, I think some women may be afraid that the husband would abuse his role of being the head of the family (Whatever I say goes type of attitude). As husbands, is there a line we need to be aware of which we shouldn't cross so that we don't abuse this role?

(3) Suppose both the partners are professional degree holders and initially both are working, but after having kids, the husband realizes that there is a need and priority for the wife to stay home and take care of the kids, does the husband have the right to ask his wife to quit her job and fulfull her role as a mother? I ask this because the wife may not like this idea of her having to give up her career to do this. In today's world, family values are what is being attacked by Satan to cause spiritual decay within a family. As the husband, I know that it is my duty to be the bread earner of the family (perfect example of this seen in Genesis 3:16-19 where God punishes both Adam and Eve. We see God giving Eve the role of child bearing and Adam the role of toiling to earn bread for himself and of course his family). Can I safely conclude that the wife must give her priorities to being a mother more than being a career woman?

(4) Some girls will have both male and female friends in their lives. I know and I have seen many of them hugging each other in public places (like conferences, youth retreats, even at church). Personally, I wouldn't like my wife to hug any of her friends of the opposite sex. However, she may argue that it's a silly restriction on her. What does the Bible teach us about regarding this matter of how to conduct ourselves after we're married?
